Animal waste management plant inaugurated in Marsa

Speaking at the inauguration of the new Wateserv EU-funded autoclave rendering plant to the treatment of animal waste, Wasteserv CEO Tonio Montebello reported that the job was part of its drive to enhance the nation ’s waste treatment infrastructure.

Montebello also clarified that the plant could result in substantial savings produced in the incineration plant, which processes some 6,000 tonnes of waste per year.

Projects manager Jean Luke Zarb explained that the problem with the current system was that a lot of energy was being wasted in incinerating fats or water in the carcasses.

“This plant will probably work essentially as a industrial pressure cooker in that it will dry up the carcasses ahead,” he said, adding that this could ultimately result in less electricity required by the incineration.

He added that the fats would likewise be utilized as fuel to the plant itself, therefore reducing its fuel consumption.

Stressing that the plant would also be utilized to treat materials coming from Gozo, Montebello explained that the plant would also banish issues that normally rose if the incineration was below maintenance, ensuring a smooth transition and functioning.

Environment minister Leo Brincat reported that the fall in gas consumption could also ultimately lead to less dangerous greenhouse gas emissions.

“Another novelty that the plant will introduce, is in died foodstuffs containing animal by products, which would normally need to be incinerated,” he explained using a pizza as an example.

“The plant will allow us to treat these foods then forward them to other treatments plants to flip them into biofuels,” he added.

Brincat reported that the job would also increase Wasteserv’s total operation, which the company was also looking forward to the inauguration of the Malta North MBT at the coming months.

EU funding parliamentary secretary Ian Borg added that the project, 85 percent of which was financed by the EU, was also finished in record time – about annually.

“The government is also currently evaluating jobs for the newest $200 million fund bundle under the European Regional Development Fund,” he explained.
